Become a “Friend of Great Start”
Local group partners with businesses and organizations to create unique relationships

Escanaba, MI – What is a "Friend of Great Start"? Last November, the local Delta-Schoolcraft Great Start Collaborative kicked-off a new initiative called “Friends of Great Start”.  The initiative is simply meant to create partnerships between businesses and organizations to help spread the word about the importance of early childhood.  “We want to reach out to our local community and ask for support in a different way,” stated Tara Weaver, Director of the Delta-Schoolcraft Great Start Collaborative.  A “Friend of Great Start”, agrees to support the efforts of the Delta-Schoolcraft Great Start Collaborative to help ensure that all children in Delta and Schoolcraft Counties get a Great Start.  By signing on as a “Friend”, participants agree to support the efforts of the Delta-Schoolcraft Great Start Collaborative through one or both of the following ways:

  1. Partnering in events with Great Start by donating time and/or resources
  2. Displaying and/or distributing Great Start information to the public and/or employees

“Our local businesses and organizations are extremely important in our efforts.  By fostering these relationships in our community we are creating a better understanding of the importance of the first five years.  It is during these years that approximately 90 percent of brain development takes place – this is a tremendous time of growth and development for a child” stated Weaver.

Signing on as a “Friend of Great Start”,  is advantageous to businesses and organizations as well.  "Friends" are advertised free of charge on the Great Start website and Facebook Page, included in monthly newsletters, and listed as supporters at Great Start events throughout the community.  "Friends" also receive a sticker or window cling to display at their business to show their support.

Since last November, the following businesses and organizations have signed on as "Friends":  Delta County:  Elmer’s County Market, Leigh’s Garden Winery, Mr Bike & Ski, Northern Screen Printing, Brampton Bike, Senator Casperson, Phil and Lee's Homes, Darmogray Jewelers, Ramidos, Sayklly's, Lisa Ann, Trotter's Floral, Small Wonders Preschool, Kathy's Gifts and Treasures, Delta Chamber of Commerce, Kathleen Paulson, CPA, Vader and Vader Atty's at Law.  In Schoolcraft County:  Jack’s Fresh Market, Emerald Elementary, Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital & Rural Health Clinic, Manistique Schools and Public Library, Emma Claire's Boutique, Mitchey's Movies, Midwest Sound and Security, Go Figure, Butterfly Touches, Good Neighbor Heart Ministries, St Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, Just Computers, and Thompson Veterinary Clinic.
