The Great Start Vision

A Great Start for every child in Delta and Schoolcraft Counties.

Safe, healthy, and eager to succeed in school and in life.

 The Great Start Mission

The purpose of the Delta-Schoolcraft Great Start Collaborative is to assure a coordinated system of community resources and supports to assist all families in Delta and Schoolcraft Counties in Michigan in providing a great start for their children from birth through age five.  The factors that have been determined to influence a child's readiness for school and life include the following five components:

Physical Health Care
Social-Emotional Health
Early Care and Education
Parenting Education and Family Support
Basic Needs, Economic Security and Child Safety

These five components are often displayed on a star to reflect the multi-component system of Great Start.  If you would like to view this display, please click here:  "Great Start Star".

Physical Health
Infants and young children and their families are physically healthy.

Having complete physical and child development services.  This would include assessment and intervention, for all young children, including those with special health care needs, as well as timely and appropriate referrals for children with developmental, behavioral and psychosocial concerns.

Social-Emotional Health
Infants and young children and their families are
socially and emotionally healthy.

Having specialized child developmental and mental health services designed to promote the social-emotional well-being of all young children and address the needs of children at risk of developing mental health problems or in need of mental health intervention.

Early Care and Education
Families have access to high quality early care and education.

Having early care and education services that support children's early learning, health, and social-emotional well-being.

Parenting Education and Family Support
Families support and guide the early learning of
their infants and young children.

Having supports for parents in the critical role they play in their child's overall development.  Support for the healthly development of children by addressing the stressors impairing the ability of families to nurture the overall development and well-being of their children.

Basic Needs, Economic Security and Child Safety
Infants and young children live in safe families
and have their basic needs met.
Families of infants and young children are economically stable.

Having services and supports that address the basic, daily living needs of families as well as child and family safety.
